WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UC San Diego sophomore thrower Nick Howe was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending April 11, it was announced Monday by the league office.

Howe was one of 5 student-athletes representing UCSD at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational in LA over the weekend and came up with a big performance in the men's javelin throw. Competing against an elite field, he won the event with a toss of 220'6", beating out unattached competitor Aris Borjas by a full foot.

Howe's throw not only set a new program standard in the event, but it was also the top mark in the Division II ranks this season. The Aptos, Calif. native has now topped the school record in the javelin on three separate occasions in 2010.

Howe was named CCAA Men's Track and Field Freshman of the year for 2008-09 and promises to continue successfully for years to come.

Howe and the Tritons will be back in action on Saturday with the Soka Peace Invitational in Aliso Viejo.
